Renewable Energy

  • Concentrated Solar Power

Concentrated Solar Power plants concentrate sunlight into a heat receiver by the use of special mirrors. Heat is then transferred to a fluid, with the aim of "moving" heat, into the production plant where heat is converted into electricity.

At the moment there are four main types of technology available in the market:

  • Parabolic Trough;
  • Fresnel Reflector;
  • Solar Tower;
  • Solar Dish.

Of all the available options, a significant com-mercial development is currently registered with plants adopting the technology of the "Parabolic Trough". A leap is also expected, in the next years, with the technology of the "Solar Tower".

CSP plants require a consistent amount of solar irradiance. For this reason major projects are being implemented in countries where latitude is below 40 degree.

With a 3-GW capacity installed worldwide, CSP industry is still in a start-up phase. An extra 12 GW of installed capacity is expected by the end of 2015.

com-passo projects are on-going in the fields of:

"development of 3 Parabolic-Trough plants for industrial applications".

  • Hydrogen and Fuel Cells

Hydrogen applications are, at the moment, the most promising solutions for production of electric energy. In particular, a great deal of attention is given to fuel cells because of the highly optimised cycle of hydrogen management.

Major applications in this area are currently observed in the following sectors:

  • electricity generation for industrial applications;
  • electricity generation for mixed industrail and residentail applications;
  • electricity generation for mobile application and vehicle drive.

  • Eolic Energy

Eolic energy is converted into electrical power by the use of wind turbines. Big wind farms can count up to one hundred wind turbines connected to the electric power grid.

Innovative solutions are being implemented as in the case of offshore farms or those plants, linked to high-altitude wind turbines, which make use of special kytes.

com-passo projects are on-going in the fields of:

"project of a mini wind turbin for domestic/residentaila applications".

  • Biomass and Biofuel

Research and development are ongoing in the field of decentralized, small-scale and sustainable CHP generation from local biomass waste resources. Many integrated projects are taking shape, as it is the case of a system which integrates a steam-blown gasifier together with a CHP generator.

Interesting applications are observed with production of electricity and heat subsequently distributed to heat and power retailer shops.
